A native Oregonian, Kathie has always had a knack for visualizing living spaces and began drawing “dream houses” on grid paper in her early teens. By the time she graduated high school, she knew she wanted to pursue a career in interior design. She introduced herself to a local contractor at a lumberyard, who hired the then-17-year-old on faith.
After her education through Bassist College’s Interior Design Program (Art Institute of Portland), Kathie launched her own company in 1995, originally focusing on planning kitchens and baths.
“For my first ten years in business I partnered with local remodelers for project installations,” recounts Kathie. But I missed being as involved with my clients once their designs were complete, and I found I had a growing interest in seeing the whole process through.” Already in possession of her contractor’s license, she started running full remodels in 2005, and has never looked back. Now employing 15 carpenters and designers, Maughan Design + Remodel focuses on kitchens, baths, whole-house remodels and additions.
Adds Kathie, “What I enjoy the most is really thinking through how to make the best use of an existing space to meet the needs and dreams of the people who live there. It’s satisfying to pay attention to every detail of a project, so it fulfills what it’s supposed to, functionally and aesthetically. I love creating the best version of ‘home’ possible – and that’s individual to every client.”
Her attention to detail has paid off in the continued growth and success of her business. Maughan Design & Remodel has won several prestigious industry awards. The firm is a consistent recipient of the Best of Houzz awards in both the service and design categories, and has appeared on Remodeling 550’s annual list of largest remodelers in the nation for several years running.
In her free time, Kathie loves travel and hitting the streets with the Runner Chicks Training Club. She and her husband James enjoy hiking together and perpetually remodeling their own home. Kathie and James also give back as a coach couple through the Marriage Team program, teaching other couples communication techniques to strengthen their marriages.
